The National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) and the Wales Cancer Network (WCN), Public Health Wales, are the NLCA’s data collection partners.
The Audit receives de-identified data extracts from the NCRAS and the WCN including Trust/Health Board submissions linked to selected data items from national datasets on the diagnosis, management and treatment of every patient newly diagnosed with lung cancer in England and Wales.
All patient identifiable information including name, address, date of birth, address, postcode and NHS number is removed (de-identified) by NCRAS in England and WCN in Wales before they are securely transferred to the NLCA Project Team. The NLCA presents analyses of these data in annual reports to provide information regarding the type and extent of lung cancer and the quality of lung cancer services and treatment in England and Wales.
The data-controllers for the national datasets received by the NLCA for analysis are as follows:
- National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) – cancer information on English patients from Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD) , National Cancer Registry Dataset (NCDR) , National Radiotherapy Dataset (RTDS) and Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy Dataset (SACT)
- NHS Digital – English hospital data from Hospital Episodes Statistics Dataset (HES)
- Wales Cancer Network (WCN) – cancer information on Welsh patients from Cancer Information System for Wales (Canisc)
- NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS) – Welsh hospital data from Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW)
